PRESS RELEASE

2 July 2024 (Suva, Fiji) Pacific feminist and women human rights defender-led movements for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) received a welcome boost today with the announcement of a groundbreaking five-year investment by the New Zealand Government. The NZD$3 million partnership activity is being funded by the Pacific Feminist Fund with support from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It will be implemented by DIVA for Equality (DIVA) as Convenor for the Pacific Feminist SRHR Coalition.

The activity aims to ensure that Pacific women, girls and non-binary people in all their diversity own and advance their human rights and access to justice through the guarantee and protection of their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Speaking at today’s official announcement, Pacific Feminist Fund Co-Lead, Michelle Reddy, said, “This partnership with the New Zealand Government complements our work and aligns with our commitment to the Pacific Feminist Charter principle of, ‘Universal, comprehensive, integrated and quality health and education systems, including SRHR, is supported’. By transforming the funding landscape, we ensure that Pacific changemakers at the forefront of SRHR progress receive the resources that they need to ensure that every individual has the knowledge, agency, and quality information needed to make informed decisions about their reproductive well-being.”

DIVA for Equality’s Executive Director, Noelene Nabulivou, said, “This funding will support the work of local, national and regional groups in the Pacific Feminist SRHR Coalition. It will ensure solid multi-year work by DIVA and others on comprehensive approaches to sexual and reproductive justice, rights, health and wellbeing. This is a welcome signal on the importance of sexual and reproductive rights in achieving gender-just development.”

DIVA for Equality and the Pacific Feminist SRHR Coalition’s strategic joint efforts over the next five years (2024-2029) aims to enhance feminist and women-led efforts in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). With a focus on community-level services that are integrated, high-quality, and accessible to all women, adolescents, girls, and trans and non- binary individuals, this partnership will empower grassroots, local, and national organisations to strengthen comprehensive SRHR activities, including improved access to contraception and family planning services.

This partnership is part of the New Zealand’s Government’s five-year multi-country NZD $30 million investment (2022-2027) Supporting Improved Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for People in Pacific Island Countries, supporting improved health outcomes through Pacific peoples’ full realisation of their sexual and reproductive health and rights.
